Voyager 1 launches on its journey to the outer planets

NASA launched Voyager 1 to explore Jupiter and Saturn, carrying the Golden Record with sounds and images of Earth. It went on to become the most distant human-made object and the first spacecraft to enter interstellar space, still transmitting data decades later.
